Before diving into the fun, make sure you have the following materials on hand:

• 12×12 Cardstock in burgundy, mustard yellow, orange and cream or any Fall-themed colors of your choice 
• Green Floral Wire
• Scissors or Wire Cutters
• Pencil
• Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
• Small twigs, approximately 2 inches long (or you could use ¼” wooden dowels)
• Free Printable Template (or SVG file if using a Cricut or Silhouette cutting machine)

 

Step-by-Step Directions to Create Your 3D Paper Pumpkins

Download and Print the Template: Begin by finding and printing the free printable pumpkin template at the end of this post. You can choose to cut out one or all of the template pieces, depending on how many pumpkins you’d like to create.

 

Selecting and Tracing Your Cardstock: Choose a patterned piece of cardstock from your Whimsy or fall-themed paper pack. Pair it with a coordinating solid fall color. Begin tracing your pumpkin template onto each of your chosen cardstock sheets. For each 3D pumpkin, we used 10 cutouts. If you’re efficient, you should be able to get 10 templates traced onto each cardstock page, allowing you to create two pumpkins per sheet.

 

Cutting Out the Pumpkin Pieces: Carefully cut out each traced pumpkin piece. Take your time with this step to ensure clean and precise edges, which will make your final product look professional.

 

 

 

Folding the Pumpkin Pieces: Next, fold each of your pumpkin pieces in half. This creates the 3D effect when you start gluing them together.

 

 

Gluing the Pumpkin Pieces: With your hot glue gun, begin gluing the folded pumpkin pieces back-to-back along the folded seam. Alternate the patterns for a visually appealing design. Continue gluing until you have two sets of five pieces.

 

 

Continue gluing your pumpkin pieces together, alternating colors, until you have two sets of five. Be sure to press each seam firmly to ensure a secure bond. This will help your 3D pumpkin maintain its shape over time, especially if you plan to use it as part of your yearly fall decorations.

 

 

Apply glue down the outer seam of one of your pumpkin sets. A thin, even line of glue will work best here, ensuring the pieces stick together without any excess glue oozing out. If you find the glue drying too quickly, work in small sections, adding glue as you go.

 

 

Attach a twig to the glue. Choose a twig that has a bit of character—maybe one with a slight curve or an interesting texture. This will add to the natural look of your pumpkin. If you don’t have twigs available, small wooden dowels or even cinnamon sticks can make great alternatives, adding a subtle autumnal scent to your project.

 

 

Apply glue down the outer seam of a second set of pumpkins and attach that to the other side of your twig. Carefully align the edges to ensure the pumpkin pieces match up perfectly, creating a seamless look. If you want a fuller pumpkin, you can add more layers at this stage, just be sure to alternate the colors and patterns for visual interest.

 

 

Spread your pumpkin layers out and add a little glue to where the two sides meet. This step helps to create a smooth, rounded shape. You can gently adjust the layers to make sure they fan out evenly, giving your pumpkin that perfect 3D effect.

 

 

Finishing Up

Cut a piece of floral wire approximately 3″ long. Wrap approximately 2″ of that wire around a pencil to curl it. This curly wire will mimic the look of pumpkin vines, adding a whimsical touch to your project. If you want a more natural look, you can wrap the wire in green floral tape before curling it.

 

 

Wrap the remaining 1″ of the wire around the twig. Secure it tightly so it doesn’t slip off. If you want to add even more flair, consider attaching a small fabric leaf or two to the base of the twig, just beneath the wire curl.

If you use the SVG file, open it up in your design software and adjust the pumpkin size to 3.2 width and 2.51 height. Of course, this can be adjusted up or down based on your liking.
