If you’ve followed us for long, you know we are a sucker for Paper Bag Puppets! My kids have so much fun creating them and get a lot of use from them after, putting on puppet shows and going on magical adventures with their paper bag puppets. So of courses, we just had to add a Paper Bag Christmas Elf Puppet to our collection! Just as with all of our paper bag puppets, we make it easy with the free printable templates!
Isn’t he just adorable! My daughter says he’s her new favorite puppet. Though I’m sure that will change just as soon as she finds another one to make. For now, she loves telling him all about our Elf on the Shelf and the adventures they’ll go one once he arrives!
To recreate this little guy, start by gathering a few basic supplies.
- Colored craft papers
- Craft glue
Paper Bag Christmas Elf Puppet Instructions:
Select light pink, brown, green, red, yellow and black colored craft papers for the Elf paper bag puppet. Trace the head and ear cutouts on the pink paper, the nose and inner ear cutouts on a darker shade of pink paper, the hair on brown paper, belt on black paper, belt buckle and collar pompoms (small round shapes) on yellow paper, collar on red paper, and the outfit on green paper. You can use the eyes directly from the template. Of course, these are the colors we chose to use. You can get creative and use any colored craft papers you want.
Attach the inner ear cutouts on the main ear cutout; attach the yellow round shapes on the pointy parts of the red collar cutout; and attach the hair cutout on the top side of the head cutout.
Attach the eye cutouts on the head pattern and attach the ear patterns on both sides of the head pattern.
Attach the nose on the head pattern and use a sharpie to draw the mouth and trace the eye outlines.
Cut a slit on the yellow marked lines of the buckle pattern and insert the belt strip through it; place the buckle in the middle of the strip. Attach the belt along the middle of the green outfit pattern (rectangle shape) and attach the red collar pattern on the top side of the outfit.
Grab your paper bag. The bottom side of the bag will be the top side of the Elf puppet. Attach the outfit pattern on the front side of the paper bag, keeping the collar towards the bottom side of the bag.
Flatten the bottom side of the bag with the front side (outfit) of the bag. Attach the head pattern on the bottom side to complete the paper bag puppet, as shown.
To add the optional hat, cut the template pieces out onto green and yellow colored cardstock (or any colors you choose).
Glue the hat border to the bottom of the hat then add the pompom.
Attach the hat to the head of your elf and allow to dry.
Once dry, your puppet is ready to be put to use! Where will his adventures take him?
